Pi (2018) connects the mathematical equation of Pi with notions of ownership, capitalism, and observation. Here, the artist initially posits: how many numbers of Pi can the average viewer recall? Pirbahi intervenes into the equation via changes in numbering and connecting color to each work’s titles. In doing so, Pi questions how branding is engrained in societal memory — we know the specific color of red associated with Coca-Cola, but no further than the first four numbers of Pi. This truly fundamental equation is vital in the calculation for building, quantum physics, music theory, medical procedures, air travel, and space flight - and undoubtedly, it is something we should all be more familiar with. Pi brings to the light the prevalence of branding, the connection between color and capitalism, and the dampening of mathematical curiosity.
